In Amrit Sanskar, that’s what Sikhs call baptism, just like us its a sacrament for them. There religion started 500 years ago in Punjab. Sikhs follow 10 guru’s called: Guru Nanak, Guru Angad, Guru Amar Das, Guru Ram Das, Guru Arjan and 5 more. There holy book is called the Granth Sahib which is written in Gurumerki invented by Guru Angad. In Amrit Sanskar, men took the name Singh which ment lion, and girls took the name Kaur ( which means princess) and other symbols called the 5 ks. To show that they were equal that they drank Amrit from the same bowl which they still do today. Each Sikh usually recives this in their late teens.
The five ks are kava which means link or bond, a steel bracelet which stands for an unbreakable link with the Grants Sahib. It is also a symbols of physical, mental strength. Sikhs treat it as a gift from God and never cut it not even for a photo. Sikhs think that not cutting their hair God’s will. Â Â Â Â Â
Kaccha is a giant pair of shorts. It is an example of saving someone. Kirpan is a sword. It to defend the weak and fight for what is right. It is worn as a religious symbols and never as a weapon.
Instead of Sikhs having Godparents they have a guru that watches over them and are baptised infront of special people. Sikhs promise to sacrifice them selves to the Lord. Dedicating their body and mind, I have crossed over the terrifying world ocean and shaken off the fear of death. ( Guru Arjan, Chant, page 576)
In Amrit Sanskar they get given a sword just like how we get given a candle. They also have a holy book called Granth Sahib just like our bible. They have a God just like us. In their Baptism they get given gifts from God.
First of all, they have different name for baptism which is Amrit Sanscaer. The next is that their baptism is performed in front of Guru Goblina Singh these are very important people. Unlike us they celebrate in a Gurdwara but we celebrate in a church. In the other religions baptism the baby is forced to drink sugar water. the recipie for this is sugar and water. In our faith we have the priest pour holy water on our heads. An intresting thing is that they don’t have godparents because they are Baptised in front of very important and famous people.
